An Apple is no better than Windows

Before all you fanboys start acting funny/shocked and stuff, I am not here to do apple-bashing. I’m just here to state that I’m not taking sides. I own an Apple Macbook, a Windows Desktop and a Linux Desktop. At work, I use a Windows Desktop and an Apple Macbook. Frankly, I bought an Apple Macbook to see what all the fuss was about. And I’m putting it to good use. But what I’m unable to understand is, how can an Apple Macbook Pro place you ahead of people who own a Windows Laptop.
Steve Jobs is an iCON( no pun intended) allright, but so is Bill Gates. I’ve heard often from people who’ve bought from Apple stating that they bought an Apple so Bill doesn’t get their money. What difference does it make? If bill doesn’t get your money, Steve does. Apple IS a good OS+Hardware. No doubt about that. But remember that you’re paying premium for its up-to-date hardware and you will pay another HUGE premium to maintain it( peripherals etc.,)
But that’s no reason to crap windows and hang it dry. Okay so Windows crashes, you get the BSOD occasionally, but thats the way its built. There’s another OS called Linux. Supposedly very stable. But no one dares crib about it. Because its opensource/free. But there are different metrics to each of these Operating Systems. Each system have different evolutions. Two are owned by companies who employ a huge number of people to build their products. The other is a community which makes it powerful, stable and free.
My kind request to everyone who reads this would be to LOVE their choice, but not critisize other products out there. Because there is only one thing that Apple/Linux/Windows does better. Be an alternative.

What can YOU do to weather the Credit Crunch
Posted on March 31, 2008
Filed Under Market | Leave a Comment
Its well known that the American Market is reeling under the disappearance of the Bear and a host of other financial institutions living in constant fear of speculations on “who’s going to be next?”
We find articles and expert opinions about what the great people( read Feds and one or two heavy weight financial institutions) can do to bring US back to its former glory. For all obvious reasons, global markets take a hit when the US Markets go down. Think about it. What can YOU do to counter the credit crunch. Forget the Feds. Forget the Government. How would YOU contribute?
1) First Things First - Analyze your holdings. Jot down all your assets and liabilities. This is good to know where you stand and how much liquid cash you have stashed away. Lets call this money Sum A. Do not worry worry even if you don’t.
2) Daily Expenses - Calculate your daily expenses. And calculate how much each and every penny amounts to each month. Now, think about all the useless luxuries you’ve been availing. Can you reduce the number of times you eat out? Can you cut down on one pack of cigarettes/month? Can you downgrade your subscription to a package which lets you view only what you want? Can you cut down on that morning coffee you normally have at that coffee shop and instead make yourself a nice cuppa at home? Simple things like this make a huge difference. Calculate the total amount of money you can save each month. Lets call this Sum B.
3) Earnings and taxes - A lot of us do not even bother to look at our payslips and bank accounts very closely. Calculate the taxes you pay. In many countries, earners have Tax Rebates if he/she is willing to invest money in funds like Mutual Funds/ Pension Schemes/ Life Insurances etc., Google your alternatives. And plan for some smart investments. Also look at your bank accounts/credit card accounts closely and you’ll find that you’re paying some unnecessary charges towards services you don’t need. Mint is a good site in helping you plan your finances. Lets call this Sum C.
4) Investments -If you’ve already invested in the market, you might be worried. Don’t be. The markets are never a shortcut to earn benefits in a short time. They never were. Over the recent past, the markets were on a surge and people who invested in the right funds last month might have had good returns last week. But that was last week. This week, the situation is different. Gear up for it. So if you’ve lost money, just sit tight and wait. If you can’t wait, and you want to save whats left of it, go ahead and encash it. But that is going to be your LOSS. Markets might be down now. But this will not be the case ever. Lets name this Sum D.
5) Simple Investments - Assuming that you have sum A to spend, just go ahead and deposit it in a highest returns fixed deposit you can find. This is going to be your saving. Now, coming to Sum B and Sum C. Make use of this money to invest in the market. This IS a good time to buy shares. In fact, there might not be an opportunity to buy shares this cheap for a long time. Buy some good shares of a reputed company. Normally the thumb rule is simple. You have to look at investing in a solid company which would not just vanish overnight.
If you feel nauseated thinking about the share market, invest it in funds which promise you a guaranteed return of at least the money you invested. Curb the urge to invest in Real Estate/ Gold/ Oil Related Shares. Now is simply not a good time.

Google Inc. co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page bite the bullet and take home their $1 annual salary again in 2007, though the year saw a massive decline in the company’s stock price losing more than $8.5 billion from each of their massive holdings of Google shares.
CEO Eric Schmidt also received his customary $1 salary in 2007.
Schmidt’s personal holding of 9.5 million shares of Google also took some damage from the falling market prices and that has amounted to 4.3 Billion. This is 3 Billion less than the company’s peak last November.
Brin and Page each hold around 13 Billion in Class B shares. which is 8 Billion less than what it was in November.
Bonus Figures for Brin, Page and Schmidt each recieved a Bonus of $1,724. Now, thats what I call leading by example.

Oil and Dollar

Oil prices have fallen to about 100 dollars a barrel owing to a resurgent US Dollar. Energy Shares seem to have lost their desperation, last-resort appeal. Some even say that the Bear Stearns Fiasco was a sign of significant impending economic problems and oil prices rocketed to high prices. Now, if you’re thinking about a decrease in the prices of oil in your local gas station/ petrol refill bunk, don’t be too optimistic.
Many economies around the world have tried to provide a comfort blanket to its fuel consumers and when there was a steep increase in the price of oil in the international markets, they absorbed some of the loss themselves without passing it on to the end users. So now is the time for them to recuperate and consolidate on their losses.

Drunk driving is the act of operating and/or driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs to the degree that mental and motor skills are impaired. It is illegal in all jurisdictions within the U.S and most certainly in any part of the world.
The USA has one of the worst DWI driving accident rates in the developed world while having lower to mid-range rates of alcohol consumption.
There are several situations in which the officer will come into contact with a driver, some examples are:
- The driver has been involved in an automobile accident; the officer has responded to the scene and is conducting an investigation.
- The driver has been stopped at a sobriety checkpoint (also known as roadblocks).
- The police have received a report, possibly from an anonymous citizen, that a described car has been driving erratically. The officer should verify the erratic driving before pulling the driver over. In some cases, the driver will no longer be in the vehicle.
- The officer on patrol has observed erratic, suspicious driving, or a series of traffic infractions indicating the possibility that the driver may be impaired. This is by far the most common reason for stopping a suspect.
- A police officer has stopped a vehicle for a lesser traffic offense, notices the signs of intoxication, and begins the DUI investigation.
The officer will typically approach the driver’s window and ask some preliminary questions. During this phase of the stop the officer will note if they detect any of the following indicators of intoxication
- odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath or in the car generally
- slurred speech in response to the questioning
- watery, blood shot, and/or reddish eyes
- flushed face
- droopy eyelids
- difficulty in understanding and responding intelligently to question
- fumbling with his driver’s license and registration
- the plain-view presence of containers of alcoholic beverages in the vehicle.
- admission of consumption of alcoholic beverage
If the officer observes enough to have a reasonable suspicion to legally justify a further detention and investigation, he will ask the driver to step out of the vehicle. In some states (Texas and Louisiana, for example), if the officer has reasonable suspicion or probable cause to make the stop, the driver can be ordered out of the vehicle at anytime, not just during a DUI investigation.

Will You Be Receiving A Bonus For Your Job Performance?
Posted on March 7, 2008
Filed Under Career | 2 Comments
Everybody looks forward to a nice, healthy bonus on top of their salary, but not everyone warrants it. In most workplaces bonuses are distributed on the basis of work performance, so it’s important to think well ahead and plan out how you can earn the type of bonus you think you deserve. Remember, employers are constantly observing you, and it is your year-round accomplishments that factor into the type of bonus you may be eligible for. You can not expect to get great results by working harder a few weeks before bonuses arrive. Rather, make it a point to give it your all every day you are at work. Here are some easy and actionable ways to work toward a sizeable bonus: Even if it’s not part of your job responsibility, volunteer to help others with tasks where you may be helpful. If another team or group needs help, be quick to step in and offer your advice or services. This is especially true when the task is something you are particularly skilled in. Don’t wait on others to ask for help. Volunteer to show how proactive you are and how willing you are to give of yourself to improve the overall bottom-line. Be sincere in your efforts to help others and you’ll be pleasantly surprised that what goes around does come around. Demonstrate that you do not settle for the bare minimum by doing a better job than you are asked to do - show that you are willing to go the extra mile. Don’t overlook mistakes that you could correct easily, or do your tasks half-heartedly. Strive for perfection-this will convince your employer that you are a cut above the rest and deserving of a bonus. Be proactive in mentioning and evidencing your accomplishments to the employer who makes bonus decisions. Of course, you don’t want to overdo it, but you need to make sure that the higher-ups notice what you are contributing to the workplace on a daily basis. If you go out of your way to help another team, why not casually mention it to the employer if you see him in the hallway or the elevator? Remember, bonuses are given on the basis of the work employers observe you doing, so make sure you give them plenty to admire! And as I say elsewhere, always keep in mind that proper preparation prevents particularly poor performance. ————————————————- Ken Anczerewicz is an author and publisher devoted to helping career & job seekers of all ages realize their financial goals through creating their own income streams.
